My WordPress World: Moving the Comment Box to the Top of the Comment List

“Dear WordPress Diary . . .

Moving the Comment Box to the Top - My WordPress Diary _
Finally figured out how to move the comment box above the comments!”

Warning: just a little bit of css coding . . . and quite a bit of amateur winging it.

I have been making changes – flying on the seat of my pants. Or however the phrase goes.
* Disclosure: I am always wrong with idioms. Just warning you as you follow my train of thought. *
No formal training OR budget in my court, so when something irks me about my theme or when I encounter something intriguing on another’s, I go in search for tips online.
** Another disclosure: I have crashed my site once with cut and paste nonsense. And I had to start over a second time when I clicked “update” and my css edits all went bye-bye. This is where I suspect that “do it to your child theme” lesson comes to play. Still a little murky there. **
All the time I spent searching and getting frustrated – then those a-ha moments! — I should definitely keep track of those already! Maybe to help anyone else out there on the same mind-boggling journey or to keep track of things for my own brain’s sake.
A little bit of the former, with a ton of weight on the latter.

Getting feedback via comments has been so much fun – as long as they’re real, meaning not from spammers. Every time I use that “spam” or “spammers” – I feel so bad for that luncheon meat. Just sayin’.
Back to the ever so lovely comment . . . I post my eager reply and all is warm and rosy in my WordPress World. Then wackily enough I get a few more. Life is good. My posts are my little projects – and it always jolts me a little when I get a reply and realize “Whoa – someone other than me is actually reading what I put together!” Then I have to revisit my baby, my little post, with fresh eyes. I scroll down and there are the lovely and generous comments and my silly replies.

You keep scrolling and when you get a few comments and replies lined up, “Whoa [again] – that’s way down there!”
Why is the “Post a Reply” box after the comments?

I have posted comments plenty of times – just spur of the moment when I encounter a post that I am so grateful for, but I am a mommy-entrepreneur with very limited time on my hands. I very rarely read the comments that are already posted. Maybe for DIY projects – if there is a question that I need clarified or if I’m looking for feedback to make up my mind whether to try something or not. For the most part, I am spurred to respond or inquire and would just overlook all the prior comments. And as a blogger – I like responding to individual comments/feedback and do not keep a running comment log of each of my posts when I encounter one. So, I approach each one anew.
Again, why is my “Leave a Reply” located at the very . . .

very . . .

I googled this for the longest time. Read SO many, many WordPress forum discussions that lead me to nothing but confusion and frustration.
“Such a simple thing! Dude, what is going on?!”
It would be time to take a breather. Close all my browsers and avoid the question for a few days. I had new blogs to read and quite a few of them had their “Reply Here” where I wanted mine to be, but I didn’t want Disqus or any other comment plug-in, because I tried those downloads before and had a hard time getting my comment and reply archive to transfer.
Trading in a seemingly simple problem for yet a slew of more complicated ones – pass!
One night I was in a calm state of mind, sitting on my new futon, I decided to type in “WordPress moving comment box to the top” and one of the top forum discussion links gave me the answer that I had been hoping against all hope for!!
*** My full disclosure: I am an amateur at this. This is primarily my diary of my a-ha moments, so follow my path with eyes wide open. I would suggest doing a search for “wordpress making changes to child theme”. This part of the curve is still murky to me. I need to jump in and do this one day soon, but my brain is a little too flummoxed at the moment to take it in.

My Steps to Moving the Comment Entry Box to the Top of the Comment List
1. Go to Appearance –> Editor –> comments.php
2. Locate the code for the comment entry box and cut and paste above the comment list.
If you scroll through the css here you will notice that the “comment list” aka “comment-list” in css speak is listed nearly at the top of the coding, which makes sense since that is where it appears. Here’s what the code for the comment entry box looks like:

<div id=”comments” class=”comments-area”>

<?php // You can start editing here — including this comment! ?>

<?php if ( have_comments() ) : ?>
<h2 class=”comments-title”>
printf( _nx( ‘One thought on &ldquo;%2$s”’, ‘%1$s thoughts on &ldquo;%2$s”’, get_comments_number(), ‘comments title’, ‘blogghiamo’ ),
number_format_i18n( get_comments_number() ), ‘<span>’ . get_the_title() . ‘</span>’ );

I just highlighted to cut and paste (Control-X, Control-P) above “<ol class=”comment-list>” — and clicked on “Update File”. Believe you-me, I always cringe when I do this. Then open my site to see what the damage is and thankfully my WordPress World is still up and running and the change I made came through!

There’s my a-ha moment.

Inside I did a little happy dance.

My little graphic designer brother is cursing me right now, shaking his head at all my shenanigans, but this is my diary and I can work it the way I want. I blame it on Nike.

Tell me I’m crazy. I can’t afford therapy, so it would be a public service.

Here’s a sneak peak at my Desert Wish List for when I’ve got a little budget for a little book larnin’:

    It’s great that you decided to take the leap and learn how to change something on your site yourself. Not a lot of people are confident enough to wing it, but when you do, awesome things can happen. Good for you!

Where did the summer go? Missing the bluebonnets. I almost forgot to share these custom bookmarks I made for a special event. I put together a custom back design and the special holder for their unique occasion. I was so relieved at how well received they were! Happy-happy-joy-joy.
